    Cam advice needed

     



    I have a 90 Wrangler with an autozone crate 305 (original application was an 84 camaro, auto, 4bbl feedback carb).

    I have 4.10 gears, 700R4 auto trans, and will be putting EFI on it (megasquirt using a GM TBI unit).

    I have NO emmissions stuff at all - well, ok, pvc and egr. Dual exhaust, stock manifolds, no cat, dist is not electronically controlled sparkwise, but it is an HEI unit.

    What is the recomendations for a cam? I need low RPM torque mostly. Gas mileage is an issue as this beast currently gets a whopping 10 mpg. It should do 13-14 with EFI and proper cam.

    It is not roller cam, jsut simple flat tappet. I need nothing exotic or expensive.

    Just use the stock cam, it will make enough torque and hp for your application.

    if you are using the stock ecm then you will need a stock calibrated cam.....If you are goin to chip the ecm or use an aftermarket ecm then look for a 4x4 cam these are made for your application specifically.....

    Agree with 76GMC1500. I had a 305 in an '84 Trans Am, and it moved out pretty well. Good general purpose engine - not as impressive as the 350, but it did a good job across the RPM range. It would break the tires loose (posi), and still get down the road.

    Mileage will be a problem with 4.10 gears. My '65 F100, with its original 240-I6, three on the tree, and 3.70 gears, never got over 13-14. With the FE (bored 410) and C6, and the little gas tank behind the seat, it's a short-range vehicle. Low gears and bad aerodynamics.

    The overdrive auto trans should help, but the 4.10s still are low. My wife's 2000 Expedition has the aerodynaimcs of a brick, and will get 14 at 70, and 19 at 55. 261ci engine, OD auto, 3.73 gears, 17 inch wheels (stock, with 265-70 tires).

    Slow down a bit and the mileage will go up. Basic physics - it's an exponential curve for fuel consumption as speed increases. Even with higher gears (lower numerical), you won't gain as much as if you run slow. Besides, you see more that way...

    I don't expect marvelous mileage, BUT this mileage (10) is on back roads and short bits of hiway at 60 or less. i have talked with several other folks and 10 is low...very low for this combination.

    This engine and trans came from a hard drive camaro, better rear gearing and better aerodynamics, but it got 16-18.

    My lift and 31" mudders are not helping..

    The cam that is in there is an 'emmissions' cam, it's purpose was not HP or torque first, but low emmissions first. I can run cooler, with less backpressure, and that will make a difference on optimum breathing requirments.

    if you read the original post, i will be useing a megasquirt computer - http://www.megasquirt.info/ - it has nothing in common with GM or chips or antthing like that. It just uses the GM sensors (or you can use Ford, toyota, saab, or anybodies).

    Since the stock motor made a whopping 180hp, and should be capable of 250, i figured while i had it apart for the intake swap a new cam might be a good idea. I don't need 250hp at 6000 rpm, but perhaps 275 ft lbs at 2200 rpm would be good!
