Yup - what Jerry said. It's too big. You could use a Mallory Unilite which is a solid state system (no points) https://www.summitracing.com/parts/m...kaAkGQEALw_wcB

with a remote coil such as a Mallory Promaster Classic https://www.summitracing.com/parts/m...oaAlonEALw_wcB

Bear in mind that the two Mallory components would add another $450-500.

Note the distributor on this BBC with tunnel ram..

Thanks Glenn!! The pic and cost is very helpful. I see a lot of the old school hot rods running the tunnel ram, as you said they are not good (a real dog at street rpms) but look cool? I will be talking to the machinist this week and get what his ideas are for my build. I will share them here and see what you guys say.

The casting number on my block is 3963512, researching it I found it's from 1969-1971 (I was told it came out of a 71' Chevelle). The guy told me it was a 425 hp, but not sure how to verify that.

Looking at complete crate BBCs, pretty expensive. Although I really don't know the best places to look, Chevrolet Performance, Summit, Jegs, all over $10g.

I just talked to techinspector1, his account here is messed up and I'm trying to help him get it fixed, and he said to tell you don't do anything else as he feels the combo you are talking about will be a dog on the street.

Hi, there. I would get over having a lumpy idle cam in the engine. Totally useless except for the sound if this is a street use vehicle you want to drive regularly. You will quickly tire of it. I would suggest a more traditional profile cam shaft and maybe talk to tech support at Comp Cams yourself and see what they recommend based on how you think you will use the car. I would play stupid in the call because stupid goes a long way to get the right advice from tech departments.

And find a local car performance service shop that has a rolling chassis dynomometer. They can tune your engine correctly in terms of fuel/air ratio and do any fine tuning of your fuel pressure if you are using TBI or other fuel injection. And they may give you advice on a cam as well. A Big Block engine that is set up for the max street use performance and uses a not so wild cam will give you trouble free service for a long time. I have had a couple of trucks I bought new with 454s in them, and the second one I still have and have modified it greatly. These engines are extremely reliable no matter how much work you make them do. And there just is not a sound from a car that compares to a Big Block. It does not need a lumpy idle or a loud muffler to make its statement to the public. When it idles at a light or in a parking lot, people will know what you have under the hood.
