I had something go through my BBC oil pump and stick the pressure bypass open. The engine lost oil pressure. I pulled the inserts out of the front rod to inspect for damage. They are very smooth but the lower one was stained. Nothing on crank. I wonder if I should go through the whole engine. Here is a picture.[/URL][/IMG]

you probably mean that the TOP half is wiped??????

check them all-rods and mains

496? you probably have a radius throw crank and need bearings narrowed for edge clearance to the radius---might be why those looked like that

Bearings are Clevite 77 CB743HN. They are the clearanced narrowed bearings. One of the little bands that holds the valve stem seals is what messed up the pump.

the pattern on the bearings probably wasn't a result of the oil pump valve--I quite often find on engines during disassembly the upper and lower bearings mixed up---if the bearing is reversed ( upper on the bottom) the edge will/can contact the radius screwing up the side clearance and hamper the flow across the bearing-
