As shown in the picture that Tech posted, the block casting number will be straight back from the back edge of the driver's side valve cover, down on the small "step" immediately before the bellhousing/engine joint. If you've had oil leaks that area gets pretty gunky, and if the engine is tight against the firewall you'll likely need a mirror to see the block number.
