    496 Stroker

Ok so I dumped my 396 this weekend and picked up a 454 block bored to 4.310 and a set of JE Forged Flat top pistons for $600 bucks. The block is all ready to go along with 4 bolt studded mains. I Have stock heads with 98cc chambers and 2.065/1.720 valves. I would like to go to 2.190/1.880 valves on the heads. I plan on running a 4.250 stroke crankshaft and 6.385 rods to make a 496 stroker. So once again I am looking to build this motor for off road use and street looking for around 500/500 or more. Any help would be nice.

Cast or Forged, looking at a Eagle cast steel crank ESP-104564250 and some 5140 rods from Eagle ESP-6385B as well. What do you guys think

    Thanks

496 can make 500 hp with fouled plugs...LOL.. I suggest getting some 320 cc aftermarket aluminum heads, prices are very affordable. My bud just had a 461 bb built with 10.25.1 cr, .575 lift hyd, Pro Comp 320 sq port heads, RPM intake topped with a 750 Holley. His engine will not be dynoed but engine builder told him a almost identical build made 579 hp and 550+ tq on their dyno. If you haven't purchased and parts look into getting a rotating assembley,..save a little $$

old post rehash ? mass for the 496 is the same$$ as 468or 462 or 475 if you using after market crank if you not then it is only about $300 to go 496.the496 yes it would make more then 500 hp done many builds last low buck build made 700hp But this has alot to do with many things .as for the dyno deal i been building bbc for over 30 years so i can hold my hands on the valve covers and tell how much steam a engine is going to make i spend alot of time with my customers show them what a custom cam or a shelf pick some times what the engine Could make on a dyno i try hard for them to get big HP out of there head if the engine make 700 TQ at 2500rpms . sorry i can not go along with the Pro Comp heads are P.O.S ports do not line up . guide runner have alot of crap hannging off the roofs. valve job is a joke .less you work for free and you can fix weld / port then fine but if not your welding and working on a set of head by the time you add it up. i would sell my customer a set of heads at the very good price i get them for. dart or brodixs. not go threw that crap making them fit . i was going to do a post on the pro heads as i get them very cheap. so i talked a customer in to a set on a low buck deal .well the joke was on me. i spent way over 10 hours making them work. the port by the push rod is not right .the port is way off set . the intake heil -coills where hanging in the port runner . tangs still on them. some stuff not a big deal. some stuff was easy fix. i am just not that hot on them after all the work. i hear there is a better china head .Flow tech ? but price is up there. i can buy name brand heads. oh the pro head are in my photos but some of the photos did not come out very good so i never did the post on them the ex side of the head is fine but intake side sucks not in a good way

My engine builder has had great success with Pro Comp heads. He also like you have used lots of the name brand heads too. Just depends on customers budget and what they are after. I know a few guy's that have purchased the assembled version and have no problems. I have a bud that had problems with new out of the box Dart heads, even with replacement pr, so he will never touch another pr. No matter what Co it is, crap gets out sometimes. I purchased a new Comp Cam that was ground wrong,..sent it back Comp, they verified it and replaced cam and my gaskets. My Pro Comp heads are still in the box...I hope I don't have problems...LOL..I purchased them bare.

i do not bolt heads on heads with out checking them out . the pro coms can be a better head it would not cost them a dime and there not hard to fix just time as i am fully tooled too machine any v8 head and fix many busted heads from many of the name brand stuff .Parts ..well if you been at this any amount of time your going to run in to things from every one i not even going to post all the name brand parts i sent back some very costly stuff. some times it the bone heads that work there. i used many Darts heads and blocks. i did get a bad head was not hard to fix but felt it was something i should not have to fix as it was new and a first not a blem. i call dart next day a new head was at my shop . as far as the pro comps they are what they are and thats a poor in take port lay out out of the box on the bbc and will not line up with any intake gasket or intake and need a hell of alot more work then any dart head that comes out of the box new. your engine builder must not be very fussy about what he put out the door ...i am.. use what you want

I talked to my engine builder the other day about this,...he like you has had new name brand parts that were not ready to go outa the box as claimed. But he said so far with Pro Comp heads he's used he hasn't had issues.....so far. I bet the set I have for my build will be his first crap set....LOL....It does really suck when you buy new parts that are messed up. As far as not being fussy about what leaves his shop. He's always stated he assembles every engine street or race like his 92 yr old mom has to drive it across the U.S. by herself....LOL... I used to slap engines together when I was a teen and early 20's...LOL..never mic'd anything just trusted that machine work was good. Now being older and wiser and this stuff isn't cheap...I pay my bud to build it right.
    vara4 and rspears like this.
