if you have all the caps but one if you have alot of caps to pick thru you can get very close with not much work . gm caps from engine to engine can be way off on bore center line ..number 5 cap is a big deal as that has your thrust on it and if not dead on you will have no end play bind or thrust will only will run on one 1/2 of the thrust bearing. line boring can be set up to fix a engine with new caps or a heavy line bore from burnt up mains . honing can not move alot of metal like a cutting bit/line bore and will not put as much heat in to the part keeping it more to size .honing takes time as there cool down time to hold size stone break down... boring can not moving the crank as much or put it were you want to a point if the guys on the ball ... honing is fine for tune in were caps are are lined up and just need to be open up on size. some guys like hones as they say you can get the bearing to lay flatter and get more heat to transfer ....BUT guys with solid line bores with a good cutter bit can get very close if not the same finsh and have more control over tapper. drop .
