402 BB and TQ Converter Questions

Hi Yall, im putting my first project together and have no clue about motors.
I bought a 402 bb bored 30 over with 15cc ceramic dome pistons, 427 corvette heads and it has a 472 lift with 282 duration and roller rockers. I have no idea what all this means or if i wrote it down right but thats what they told me. Could yall guesstimate how much hp this thing would put out? Another question I have is what or how big of a torque converter would i need. Im hooking it up to a two speed powerglide and im not sure if i need to have a stall or not. Any help would be appreciated.

not sure of chamber volume, but sounds to me like it might have high compression with those domes. Do you know the casting numbers on those heads, probably rect. ports being from the 427 corvette. That would've been late 60"s I believe. I really don't have a power estimate but I would throw around the numbers of at least 400 HP and 450 lbs of torque. I don't think you need a big stall but some wouldn't hurt, maybe 2500? More info is needed to really be more accurate, give more numbers and the components you're going to use. Casting numbers are great. And if the heads have been milled your compression is going to be higher.

A lot of assumptions here like headers and I could not find the cam you stated, very low lift cam for the duration. Used a 279 duration cam with 510 lift.
HP - 400
TQ - 450
a stall of 2500 is recommended

I had the casting number from the heads but have seemed to misplaced them at the moment. I went ahead with a 2500 stall converter and the mechanic should have it fired up today hopefully. Thanks for the advice!! i'll let yall know how it turns out.

Well, how did it turn out?

Sorry it's taking a while. It took them a while to get the headers in place. I still have not heard it run yet! Just needs a radiator power steering pump and alternator and a while lot of electrical stuff like the blinkers and ect. I'll let ya know how it goes.

Vehicle weight is roughly 3900lbs. It is a 79 Trans am.
I was told when I purchased the shell that it had 3.73 gears.
Intended use is more street than strip since the closed one is 2 hours away.
I was unable to find any additional info on the cam. I'll just have to use the seat dyno once I get it rolling on its own.

I know this is an old post but I kinda wandered off for 2 years with other hobbies and now I have to work on it or the Lady of the house threatens to make me sell it.

Thank you! I plan to get it up and running. No more breaks or other hobbies until she is done! I'm putting my foot and funds down this time!

Access to a dial gauge & stand?
What you need to do is measure the lift & base of the cam by attaching the gauge to a rocker then by hand ( breaker bar ) roatate the motor.
I know there is a formula to get .50 lift but I cant add to that.
Hopefully Pat will be able to chime in with more apropriate & true direction.

Cam size plays into torque converter.
You want the stall to be well within the cam // heads power band

With a magnetic base & dial INDICATOR and a degree wheel, you can measure and document the cam profile, but before trying all that, maybe you can get the numbers off the front of the cam?

Post up the numbers and maybe folks here can identify the cam (if you can't).:3dSMILE:

NAH! It's all good!:LOL: But if you have to buy one.. maybe search for the numbers first..:)

Gauge/indicator?? Looks like I have my weekend full of reading literature on these items. I can't even get the power steering pump to fit right with the parts I ordered. The adjustment only travels half the distance before the top bracket hits the shaft on the pump and there is the metal line behind the pump that is extremely close to the block. Not to mention the pulley for it won't slide on easily and the outer rim is 1/16" away from the Steering gear box. What a head ache.

Thanks t-top and 34_40 for the info on the cam. I will be doing thorough research on finding the cam size. However I'm hesitant to find out since the 2500 stall is already installed:( what's the worst that can happen? Now i just just want the darn thing running and going forward. Reverse would be great too.

With your relatively tame cam & 3.73 gear, you will be ok for street.
What is your plan trans cooler wise?

To be honest with you I haven't planned that far ahead nor do I know how to go about doing that. As far as radiator goes, I have it installed with a lower hose and there are two metal lines installed. Remember that I'm still learning so I have yet to trace where those metal lines run off to. Could it be the Trans? ShouldI get an independent if that's the case?
My weekend didn't turn out expected. I had to run out of town to search for my parents lost dog. They took a trip and he managed to escape. I've been spending my time calling every where and posting flyers on every post that I found. If you see a Vizsla for sale in the San Antonio area let me know please. $1000 reward for his return. I've done all that I can for the moment to find him. Sundays plans are replacing the brakes on my 07 Tundra and piddling with the project car. I may have to purchase a different P/S pump that will allow it more clearance. Maybe a mid mount? Who knows. I just want to get enough to fire it up since its been sitting for so long. Thanks for adding more to my plate haha but I will look into the Trans cooler tomorrow as well. I do appreciate y'all's input!

In regards to the trans-cooler. There are a million opinions out there but they all will agree that you do need something! At a minimum, run with the factory installed cooler in the radiator. With your higher stall converter you'll probably add to the heat level of the fluid. But you can add an external cooler later if needed.

Hope you get the dog back! Vizsla is a beautiful dog too.

Sounds like the 2 metal lines are trans cooler lines.

I'm with Mike (34_40), your two metal lines going to the radiator are the tranny cooler, and I wouldn't worry with any added cooler unless you see that you have a heat problem. I'd venture that about half of the external coolers installed are not needed, and cause the tranny to run too cold about ten months out of the year or even more in areas which don't have extreme heat in the summer. After you have it running right borrow an infrared digital temperature gun from someone, take it out for an extended run on a hot day, and shoot your tranny pan to see if you need to worry with added cooling.

I hope that your parent's Vizsla has an ID chip, and that it's registered with one of the national registeries. Any vet will scan for a chip if asked, and often any time a new patient arrives to ensure the "owner's" contact info pops up. I was going to suggest CraigsList but it looks like you've already got it covered with a picture ad (he's a beauty!!). There's also several places where you can list the lost pet with contact info, like http://petkey.org/pet-recovery/lostfoundhome.aspx . Hope someone gets him home soon, and that they do it just because it's right and not for the reward.

Did your parents get their dog back yet? Hoping for a happy ending to the story of him jumping the fence.
