    big block ls6 454

my neibor ask me if i wanted to buy a 454ls6 in his garage that has been there for 15 years and never had oil in it.I went and looked at it it looked like a normal big block crate motor to me.what i could see of the casting numbers was 1006 couldnt make out the last few it does say hi-perf and it has sqaure port heads.he said it was a g.m perm ls6 454 450hp bought in the late 80;s early 90's.its hard for me to beleive that it came with a painted black intake even though it looks to be alum.can sombody help me i dont want a dog motor already have enough of these.he is 71 yrs old and seems honest.also the valve covers dont have any kind of sticker on them.what should i be looking for i called gm they cant help abit they say..

If it’s a 10069286 block you’re looking at a real good motor. That’s a “4-bolt, Mark IV, (short deck) 454 service replacement” that GM used between 1990-91.

The “HP” doesn’t necessarily mean a lot.

As mentioned, these guys found their way into a lot of marine applications as well and yes, they were painted black – even the aluminum intake manifolds. If the head casting is 14096188 you’re in really good shape – rectangle port, 116cc chambers and I believe that would be indicative of the 450HP version however, without knowing the internals it’s impossible to tell for sure.

Pat is our resident expert on all matters dealing with Chevy BB and I’m sure he will add some meaningful comment when he comes on line today.

What’s he want for it? If it’s reasonable to you, then it’s probably a good deal..

    Good Luck,
    Glenn

they used some of the ls6 engine in marine use but a brass runner in the intakeand brass block plugs and a lower cr pistons if all black could be merc marine engine 375 hp/454 that would be 7/16 dimp rods steel crank 188 heads.big oil pan with tray .valley tray . hard to say what it is that block was used in a lot of things . i just got done working on 3 of the 289 one 496 .two bolt . and one 4 bolt block427 . and a two bolt 427 .of all the block numbers i see alot of the 289 blocks
