cast guides
So I stopped by my local machine shop today to get a quote on having my 781's rebuilt. My machinist told me that replacing the cast guides is his last resort and that he would rather install bronze guide liners. When I told him that several of my factory guides were chipped or broken he told me I would be better off finding a better set of cores to start with. Is replacing the cast guides that much of a pain or should I be looking for another machine shop?

in short yes .the thin wall liners like k line are fast but not going to fix missing guid that need the old guid to hold them in .i use a solid guild that will cut out yours to 500 then i put a iron or mag solid bronze guild in when done there is only the new guild. i spot face down the old guids to the spring pocket and use a 500 PC seal or umbrella sounds like he not set up to put solid liners guilds in or he just dont want to work with your old heads.the thin wall like i said are very fast and EZ to sizes were soild bronzes needs reams or hone that takes more time . mang bronze i feel is the best but takes more time then iron or thin walls but is about 75% more money for solid mang bronze guids so you need to find someone that will build your heads with a 500 guid or drive your old ones out and cut your heads for bigger valves if your run out is bad .bbc chevy have been way off center to O.D to I.D on stock guidsLast edited by pat mccarthy; 09-25-2009 at 07:43 PM.

I agree with Pat that he probably doesn't have the tooling to do the solid guides---I only use the guide liners to put in thinner stem valves and then only in a good guide---if the guide is worn or broken it needs to be drilled out ---

so
If I had a set of castings that have complete stock guides the liners aren't that bad of a setup. Pat, when you say 500 guide do you mean 0.500". how thick are the factory guides.

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
