will a 400sb fly wheel work on a 454 bb chev? rd
NO it will not
Pat, on this I respectfully disagree. To my knowledge GM put only turbo 400's behind sbc 400's. Also these are the only two engines which are externally balanced and a flywheel from a 454 will work on a 400 as that is what I used on the 400 I had in a '62 pickup. Therefore I see no reason that a 400 flexplate would not work on a 454.Quote:

When I get the chance I will take a picture of the 454 flywheel that I have in the garage. It was bolted to a stock 400 sbc, which I also still have, and I never had a bit of a problem with it.Quote:

Common sense to me says that "externally balanced" means there is weight either added or removed to the flywheel to balance the internal engine spinning components. For example, A 400 FW may have FW weight added at the 2 o'clock position, whereas a 454 FW may have weight added at the 6 o'clock position.
Just because the FW's are interchangeable, does not make the engine correctly balanced... true?

In the case of the 454 flywheel I have there is extra weight added in comparison to a 283 flywheel which is what I was comparing against.
It is an extension of the counterweight.
As I stated before, to my knowledge, GM used automatics behind every 400 sbc produced and therefore if you wish to run a manual transmission behind a stock 400 sbc you have to use an externally balanced flywheel.
I see what your saying NTFDAY, the FW is needed for the clutch assembly but...
Is the added weight on the 454 FW the same AND in the same spot as on the 283 FW?
Why not use a flywheel weight like this?

On the one I have it's an extension of the counterweight on the 283.
I would assume that what you listed from ebay would work and it would be less expensive.
This is a picture of the one I have.
Guys, thanks for the info; however I am still a little confused...I have
an alumunim 400 manual flywheel, and a 5 speed Doug Nash Manual
Trans, and was possibly thinking of putting the two together. If the
400 FW would work, would the front balancer also have to be changed.

rdobbs, Please don't take my posts as advice. I am just as confused as you are on this one...
Sit back and wait, the "guys in the know" will be by soon enuff. :)
gm and any one that makes a fly wheel have different part numbers for a 454 and 400 they are both external wheels .BUT THEY ARE NOT THE SAME IF SO GM AND ANY ONE THAT MAKE THEM WOULD SELL ONE PART NUMBER THEY DO NOT .I DO THIS STUFF FOR A INCOME I HAVE BALANCE ENGINE AND PUT HEAVY METAL IN CRANKS I DO NOT CARE IF YOU WANT TO TRY IT BUT A 454 WHEEL IS NOT THE SAME AS A 400 WILL IT WORK? WELL IT COULD . I LIKE TO GET ANY THING I BUILD AS CLOSE AS I CAN 1TO1/2 A GRAM. IT WILL NOT BE WITH A 400 FLY WHEEL ON A 454 OR A 454 WITH A400 FLYWHEEL. NOW DO NOT TAKE MY WORD JUST LOOK IN A GM PARTS BOOK OR ANY ONE THAT SELL FLY WHEELS .YOU NEVER TOLD ME WHAT 454 WHEEL. YOU DO KNOW THERE TWO WHEELS FOR THE MARK4 AND 6 SO WHAT WHEEL WORKS ON A 400SBC? WELL THE PART NUMBERS ARE NOT THE SAME OR THE COUNTER WEIGHT:3dSMILE: GM #3986394 CLUTCH DIA 11. RING TEETH 168 FOR SBC EX 400..gm 454 WHEELS 3963537 .3993827 HAVE FUN GOOD LUCK
To the best of my knowledge the flywheel I posted the picture of came off a 454, at least that's what I was told when I bought it.
I put over 10,000 miles on the 400 sbc it was bolted to.
Tomorrow I will post the part # cast into the flywheel so that it can be figured out just what it was originally designed for.
