My best guess would be that one of the cylinders (or more) was just on the verge of detonation (very high cylinder pressure) with the good gas. Then when you put the crap gas in, the one or more cylinders began detonating due to low fuel quality. Back off the timing a little, change all fuel filters and load the tank up with good fuel.
