Like mooneye says, make sure your on tdc.
I would prime it a min. of 20 min.
Make sure you have oil coming out of most of your rocker arms.

2 TO 3 MIN Is long enough to prime your engine . Have some one look at the oil pressuse gauge when you are priming it . it sould go up to were the pump is set 60psi or more . Then it is ready to start .

You won't even get oil at half of the roller rocker arms in two to three min.

Maybe on a BB Chevy its different . But on my SB thats all it takes . Make sure you use a 1/2 drill . How ever long it take till the oil come up to the rockers . I also pump up the lifters with oil before installing them . .

You should never pump up the lifters before you install them.
By doing this the act almost like a solid lifter.

When you run your drill for 20min what do you think happens to the lifters ? And how will the rockers see oil if the lifters stay dry ?
