you can make up a stop on the back of the water pump if short water pump i make up a feeler gauge out of 1/8 or 1/6 steel run a longer bolt on the water pump back plate then you can use a feeler gauge to check air gap from cover to the back water pump and then use a old feeler gauge for final shim or cut up a coke can and make up shims .for a long water pump you can tack a nut on the back side of the water pump and a small jam nut on a bolt turn bolt out till it just it hits the timming cover before you use the bolt file the top of the head of the bolt flat or weld a small bit of steel in the center of the timming and turn down the button till it fits back in the cover or if a roller button is used a small block button works better if you weld a steel backer in the inside of the cover . you can tune in the end play by adding one more gasket on the timing cover less you have a alum cover them you do not have to do any of this stuff
