    BB question?Dump Truck block

Are BB that come out of dump trucks usually any good? I am in Houston right now ,and will not be able to get the ID numbers untill I get to Dallas. The guy is telling me it runs and it has just been pulled for him ,but he needs money so he says he will take 500 for it.I am new to the BB scene(My books are in the mail) ,but always wanted one for my truck.I just dont know if I should tell the guy to hold it until I can see it.Thanks

No it is a tall deck 427or 366 .a 427 can be work on to get it to do some thing. just look at all the talll deck post on here if it is 366 it would be good for some small parts crank /rod /heads not much. the 427 block is something that you can get out to 526 or so but they do not fit good in some cars and trucks

Yep, what Pat said....it has to be a 427 or maybe 366. The price is OK, but not a steal...I just bought a tall deck 427, complete, but apart, for 300.00. If you just want a Big Block, you would really be better off looking for a 454 core to start with....look in any pickups or suburbans, 70's or 80's pretty much. The 427 tall decks are OK, but a strange kinda fellow, they need different intakes, distributor, oil filter sometimes doesnt fit right, headers can be a fit to fit! Lots of different problems. John

I just got a hold of a 454 from a tow truck, how do you tell if its a tall deck or not? The block number id 14015445 and the heads are 346236... I decoded these but the info I found was not very helpful.

they never made a454 tall deck it is a78-90 454 the way i check them is if you look it the block deck were the head bolts down on a car / small truck block 9.800 block were the water pump bolt on top of pump this all most flat to block deck .100 or so. on a tall deck is about 300 of a inch taller at this point and there is more things but that is the fast way to check the deck is 10.200 on the tall deck and short deck is 9.800

Gusaroo, the tall decks were either 366 or 427's. John

Why do these not fit good in cars and trucks?

well they will if you want it to. i realy do not want to go thru it all .many things that will or will not work but they did not come in cars. so they are taller all the intake s and headers and more will not just fit but if you do know this and have the money to make stuff fit then go for it. if you do not build it to at lest a 526 then i think there not worth the work but that would be up to you. here is why i say 526 you can buy a short deck block dart world etc block and get easly to a 523 cid with a bore and all the power stuff headers etc will work for the same money trying to get the tall deck fit but you can go much more on cid 580 on the 9.800 block and 541 on the gm tall deck and make stuff fit

The worst guy's are the one's that have a 420 SBC and say it is a 283.
They even run the small 283 balancer.
