09-14-2006 04:37 PM #1MkIV mech fuel pumps all the same?

I went into my local auto parts store and asked for a mechanical fuel pump for a MkIV big block chevy and was told that unless I got the right one, I would "break my camshaft". My engine is about an '88 model 454 out of a pickup truck that ran an electric pump.

Question: Are all fuel pumps for the MkIV style BBC's interchangeable? Could I order one for my '65 biscayne or a '73 longbed and get the same thing?

I was only 95% sure that all MkIV fp's are the same so I left the store without one.

You know it is. I wont mention which one. You get the same service at pretty much all of them. While we are on the subject, what would a suitable flow rate be for a warmed over 454 ?
I have a 770cfm carb, dual plane intake, 213/219 @.050, 9.5:1cr, 990 rect ports (no comments please, I know that these are not the ideal heads :P ), headers, max rpm I'd say would be around 5700rpm. I dont like to make my engines scream but I do push them pretty hard.

fuel pressure depend on the carb. 5 lbs. is pretty standard. Originally Posted by 65cayne Originally Posted by 65cayne Mike

But there is a difference between the big and small block pumps right ??. Because I heard that if you swap 1 for the other, I forget which way around, you do some damage.

Anybody got a clue on this question ?"aerodynamics are for people who cant build engines"

Carter or Edelbrock make descent pumps for big block chevy, I always deal with Jegs or Summit . Just make sure you don't go with too high of a flow pump or you will need a regulator. 6psi works great on a Holley anything over 8 usually will overcome the needle and seat assembly.

So what you are saying Pat, is that I can use a pump rod from a small block, for my BBC, and it will work just fine?... Because the parts stores are all sold out of the "big block pump rods" which are $15/ea, but they have one in stock for SBC and it's only $5.
