is it worth it?
I have a chance to buy a 396 that is been machined and it has a cylinder sleeve and the crank thrust area as been welded and machined there are rods and the heads go with it but 1 has been ported and the other has not been touched no pistons heads need to go to machine shop after finishing the porting. he wants $700 for this is it worth it.

He's trying to make you pay for a bunch of machining that wouldn't be needed on an undamaged $400 engine. Unless its something special, its a leverite (leave 'er right there)!
