i use stainless steel allens the size is 3/8-16 the socket head some times helps where there is not much room .i used the stainless washer lock or SAE washer how long they need to be is about 1-1/8 to 1 -1/4 you can check this with a small screw driver or a drill bit by running it down the hole by hand . mark it to see were it hit and back it off by 1/8 inch. like denny said . i would add to make shure to put some type of sealer on them and make sure they are not to long some of them can hit on the push rods. a 1-1/4 may be hard to find in a stainless allens if you go this way i get 1-1/2 and cut they down to fit. if you use hex heads you should find them at auto store and this size work on short deck block like 396 to454 not on tall deck blocks with plates or thick intake i would go 1/8 from bottom you may not have threads all the way down the hole and with the washer this would be 1/4 and then you know there is not much chance off hitting the side off a push rod or getting in to threads that may not have been tap out good and you get a bad torque read .i hope this is not to much re hash
