Need low cost improvements for my 454
I have a basically stock 454 with 346236 heads and a 361959 block. What can I do with this engine to make some hp gains for a low cost.

It is in my 86 Iroc now. From what I can gather those are peanut port heads and likely a stock cam in it.
I did a gtech run with it and it ran a 13.46@105 with an easy launch. Thing is it falls on its face at around 5000rpm so I am all in about half track.
What are the good casting numbers for iron heads?
I suspect a better cam in the .550 lift area combined with better heads would wake it up a bit even with the stock pistons.
I don't want to put much money into it till I can afford to do it up as a forged 496 with good aluminum heads and a solid roller.

re cam it try 500 /505 /222/234@0.50 114 ls. this is a howards cam much more and it will take work on the heads i would check coil bind and spring psi you mite have to take some gear out the back or go to a taller rear tire

The gtechs are usually 3-4 mph high in my experience. So it is more like 101 mph I would think.
I have some 30X9 slicks I might try to see if that works better with a low rpm engine.

if you are waiting for the motor to flaten out before you shift you are losing a lot of time there. shift before it gets there and you'll run quicker. ant nothing wrong with 5000-5500 rpm with a stock 454. thats about all of it. to get more you;ll need to go bigger on most everything, heads, cam, carb., and exhaust so its really no cheap way to do it.Mike

It has an Edlebrock Performer intake, Demon 850DP, Hooker 2226 long tube headers. So it looks like short of doing heads and cam there isn't much else to try.

you are right about the HP, but dont forget about the handling. if it dont hook up its no good. you need a gear that will be turning the rpm's you want when you cross the line also.Mike

Hmmmm. Would seem like that is an awfully lot of CFM for small heads..... Maybe a vacuum secondary smaller carb?????Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

It is the carb from my old 406sb so I will keep it as I will be at least changing the heads and cam when I have the cash.

Finally tracked down my AC leaks, had to buy a sniffer tool to do it. It was one hose fitting that attached to the condenser and one quick connect fitting on my AC manifold hose. The thrill of...
