    Question BBC combo's

Hey, I have just found and registered to this website, and thank yall in advance for all the help you may give me. I am a newbie hotrodder, and will be asking many questions.

The question at hand is this, I have a 66 Lemans that currently has a 396 in it. This motor has some problems, so I would like to build a 454 to put in it whenever I have to take the 396 out. I was wondering if any of yall knew of any websites that listed BBC combos, and their subsequent dyno results. Again Thank you in advance.

Welcome.. I don't know of any websites that list BBC power options, but if you tell us what you want (power) & your budget, I'm sure you'll get some good suggestions.

Well I would like to make about 500 or so hp, and be able to run on pump gas. Any proven combinations out there? As for the budget, I want to stay as reasonable as possible, but I want good quality stuff.

I have a 468 BBC. It makes 565 hp at 5400 and 567 tq at 4400. Solid bottom end, 10.3 comp, gm alum heads oval port 2.19 intake valve. flat tappit hydrolic 540l, 230d. 110. twin 650 eld carbs, msd spark. I also had the rotating assy, combustion chambers, valves, exhaust ports, valve springs etc, and bearings ceramic coated. Thats the short list. cost out the door about 8 grand. Most of that is parts. 36* 24 in the distb 12 at the crank, 92 gas, NO problems, none, nada. A lot of detail went into this engine, no guess work, quality parts, checked and rechecked. And when we thought it was perfect we measured one more time. These #'s are dyno at the crank. Will have rw# in about 6 months, car is now in process of paint, Body is just now going back on. Lots of ways todo what you want. This is just mine. Good luck. robert

Thanks Robert! I know this may be a lot to ask, but, do you by chance have a list of brands used, and what model numbers? I have a few of these from different magazines and want to figure out just what to do from here, as I have just today agreed to pay 300 for a 454 block, and nothing else. Have plenty to do!

Yes I can, and Yes I will. The file on this car is about 10 inches thick, so give me a day or two.

if you have a 454 put a 4.250 crank shaft in it bore it to 0.60 this is a 496 good com a will make good torque and hp you will feel the torque before the hp and build the engine to the rpm you can use .if it is on the street you do not need 456 rear gear if you are driving on the hi way. srp pistons and scat crank is good stuff for the money the cam i would use a roller cam howards or isky the engine has a lot you do with what you do with the car i have had all big blocks in my 66 gto from 396 to 620+.and for the money some thing nice can be built for 6500.i have runed alot of coms I can help if you want getting 500hp is not hard but you will need good headers big tub at lest 2 or 2.1/8and exhaust 3 inch 3 1/2 with a x pipe and a good setup on the rear end to get it to hook try to get the car to take the power if not it will not hook

Hey Pat, thanks for responding. As you have basically the same car as I have I am very interested in your imput. I will be running this car on the street for the most part, although I would like to take it to the track every now and then. I would like to run mid-high sevens at the most at the track. I have a 396 in it now, but the cam is way too big, it must have too much clearance some where as the oil pressure is very low once warm, no stall to speak of, and to high gears in the rear. I just bought the car, and it was nothing what i was told it was. It does drive however, so unless the 396 dies tomarrow, I really want to build a bad boy to put in her. I really want something that will eat up most things on the street. It has 3" exhaust on it now, and as far as hooking I really cant tell because the combo's in it are way off, and I have no bottom end, I think an automatic, 6 cyl, camaro would outrun me. Although I will say it sounds really tough! I know that strokin it to 4.250 and boring will give me more c.i. I was kinda hoping that i could find a virgin block, and run standard bore, only because this will give me more life out of the block potentially. By the way while we are on the subject, a guy I know of has a 454 block, .040 over, 2 bolt main, with 1 sleeve, that the hasn't finished honed, and says may have to go to .060 over. What would something like that be worth? Just block, nothing else.

Mid to high 7's??? Are you talking quarter mile or eighth mile?? If it's quarter mile, it will take a ton of horsepower to get a car that weight to run that hard......

I used gm heads 12363390, ross pistons, oliver rods, and a gm steel crank. 500 out of a BB is pretty straight forward. Att to detail, proper clearance, and matched quality parts should get you there with an engine that will last. You can get more power, you can do it cheaper, Like I said this is just my way for this car.

i hope you are not taking 7s in the 1/4 mile my gto would not go that fast if you drop it from a plane and it is built realy good with a hi hp engine .the 66 A body cars need much work to get them to hook i had had two gto one tub and guted to 3000 this took a lot of work it had a 572 in it that made 850 hp and had 400 nos we hope it would go 7.80 .i could not keep up with the money to get to the track and sold it it an put this engine in my street gto.I made 2 1/4 headers 4 inch ex with x pipe and box the frame ford 9 inch 35 spline made new lift points on rear frame made all my rear end bars .and 400 trans with coan stall steel stator coan supper sprag and a vasco jet input.I had to make a lot of parts .when i was done this was a hand full .and need race fuel so i took it out and sold the engine and built a donovan for it I lost 120 going to the aluminun block and went bigger 630+ and made it to run on pump gas i am not trying to brag just try to tell you will need to do lots of things .money and time and more money. and for the 454 block with a sleeve in it you have to know if it is a thick sleeve . for get a stock bore it is better to bore it 0.30and deck plate and tru deck it is up to you how big you go to build it 489 0.30 or 496 0.60

Yes sorry for the confusion, my local track is an 1/8 mile track. I ment mid to high 7's in the 1/8. I realize that could not be done on a 1/4 mile.
