    Chrome trim on dash

My 51 dodge has the chrome trim on the dash. The large center piece that has the ash tray in it had some usual crud on it. I took a piece of very fine steel wool and with 1 swipe it took the chrome off and turned it a copper color. It's in really good shape and I took Mothers wheel polish and cleaned the chrome piece on the ash tray without a problem. Has anyone ever seen this? I mean I didn't even rub on it, it was like I wiped the chrome off. I stopped there, and now I'm wondering what to do with it. No one rechromes around here, and if they did it would cost a fortune. Can't understand why this 1 piece, the biggest 1 at that, done it and nothing else did. Any help?

The chrome just happened to be the thinnest at that part. You have to know that the chrome done back in the day was done nicely. The downside is the OEM's just wanted it to look nice and shiny. They did it to save money.Just a quick dip in the chrome bath after the copper. The chrome was not supposed to be double or triple plate like show chrome is today.

Double or triple plate refers to a process involving different metal, not thickness of the chrome.

Triple plate means a base coat of copper, then nickel, then chrome.

Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

Everything else will clean up nice. Only problem I've had is with this 1 piece. I wouldn't of thought with 1 swipe it would take the chrome off like that. Somebody may have polished the crap out of it at 1 time. Thanks for the replies.

Ask around, there are chrome shops you can send it to them and have it done properly.
