700 R4 trams converter

Building a 76 Camaro street- track hot rod and having trouble
mating trans to block. It has a 2800 stall conv. and it lacks
about 3/4 inch mating up. Took trans and converter to trans
shop and he said we have converter on correctly. Flywheel
is also on correctly. Called Summit and they said converter
is the one called for the 700R4. Really scratching my head
on this one.
Anyone with suggestions would be appreciated.

Is the flywheel installed in the correct orientation? You don't have it backwards?? Maybe?

Flywheel is on correctly. I even googled info on installation
and its correct. I'm beginning to think wrong converter.

I'd say you're right. Maybe the one you got was boxed wrong? It's been known to happen..

Are you sure you spun the converter until it engaged both sprockets (two clicks and movements towards the tranny)? I would spin it again while pushing slightly towards the tranny just to be sure.

I agree. On my 700R4 I thought I'd heard/felt the two distinct "clunks" but decided to spin it one more time and got an even bigger "CLUNK" as it engaged the pump. Mating it to the engine there was less than 1/2" of freeplay between the converter bolt tabs and the flex plate. Can't hurt to spin it around again.

And just to be clear, is the torque convertor preventing the transmission from going forward enough to bolt to the block? Or is there a 3/4" gap between the torque convertor and flywheel when bolted up?

Well my son and I spent about an hr this morning trying to get
the converter on correctly. It will go into the first click, but when
we spin converter for the 2nd click or clunk it will not engage.
Thinking about taking it to a trans shop for an opinion before
sending converter back to Summit

i have had them give me hell . some just take a lot of turning and wiggling .

Have you poured ANY trans fluid into the converter? If not, add a quart (or two) and let it slosh around - it may loosen the inside parts so you can spin it easier. If you've filled it to the point it spills back out, it may make it harder to turn the vanes inside.
