C-6 questions
Ok, I'm no automatic tranny guy at all! The C6 in my old pickup has a lag when you pull it into gear. Not sure lag is the right term, just doesn't want to get moving right away. The truck has been sitting a couple years again, been told that the seals can get hard and cause the problem. Or, should I just replace the dang thing before it quits completely??? I do have a good AOD I can put in it, will take a new shifter, another new driveshaft, etc. I'd sure as heck trade the C6 and the AOD for a good 5 speed and clutch setup for the truck, I know how to fix them!!!!!

I don't have anything to trade you right now.... but, sounds like the seals and front pump are "tired" on the C6.... You know enough to understand it's telling you something!
If the motors a small block.. it's hard to beat the AOD..

It might get better with a bit of exercise, but it may also be that the seals need to be replaced. A rebuild with mainly seals & gaskets shouldn't be too bad. If you were down here I'd say take it by my local tranny shop and ask Paul what it needs to be right. I agree with Mike that the AOD would be hard to beat in the truck. Just keep it out of OD if you're pulling a trailer/loaded heavy.

Dave is the lag there all the time or just the first time you drive it during the day?
Something you can try, when you first start it, shift to neutral, and slightly rev the engine a couple of times, then shift into drive. If the hesitation is gone, chances are the convertor is draining down, probably due to bad seal and/or worn bushing.

Dave, you could try putting a bottle of trans x additive in it and run it. It will help soften the seals and help clean any varnish that may have occurred from sitting. The aod is a good idea anyway though.

Lag is the same whether things are warmed up or not, it's behind a stock 351W. I know the AOD is a good tranny, drove the car it was in so maybe I'll have to go that way......Have I mentioned how much I dislike automatic transmissions????:LOL::LOL:
Thanks for the help, guys, got to do some other stuff the rest of the week but I'll get back on the old pickup and see if I can make the dang thing work!!!!!

Pretty common in old C6's. I have seen them that had to be driven a half a mile in Reverse before the truck would go forward (!) and they worked like that for months until the owners just got tired of doing it and junked the thing.
