Which fluid to use?
I have a slight leak in my automatic transmission on my Ford 289 and I don't have any idea what transmission it is or what type fluid to use in it. I'll probably get it pulled and serviced later but for now I need to know what Type fluid to add when it gets a little low? Or does it make any difference????
TIA,
Em

It does make a difference, as the different fluids have different lubricity, or "slip" built into the fluid. The first thing is to pull your transmission dip stick and look at it closely. If it's the OEM stick it will have the fluid specs stamped on the upper part of the stick, above the full/add info.

thanks, Y'all, that should fix me up - - - - been a while since I had to carry a funnel and extra fluids in the trunk :)

Not questioning the Type F for the '62 but my '90 AODE takes Mercon/Dexron, not Type F. I'd check the dipstick to see if it tells you specifics. Just my $0.02 based on past experience.

Roger, I did check the dip stick today and all it had on it was FOMOCO plus the full and add marks!

Back when the 289 was built, there were only the two choices. Fords used Type F exclusively.

My 67 bird take type F modern cars different story... take a look under that car may be something you can fix yourself..... might be worth while to change the filter in the pan...
