I know the 4.3's are internal balanced.My question is while re-surfacing a stick shift flywheel,what happens to the balance of the flywheel?.
While the 350's are also internal balanced,I used to still pound in wt's in the H/B'ers when I worked at the Chevy engine plant to get the final balance.
When done properly, nothing much will change.
The surface must be square and perpendicular to the tool. Otherwise more material will be removed from one side.
You probably need to find a shop with a surface grinder rather then a lathe. My guess - it will cost more then a new flywheel though - ~$60 bucks new for a 1990 Astro Van (a guess on the car/year) and from Rock Auto
surface grind would be best bet but as said a new one isn't that expensive
has the fly wheel is spun in the balancer machine . it is corrected neutral balanced most of the time by drilling some weight out so then it,s neutral. as you cut the face of the wheel on a fly wheel grinder the table mounts up to the wheel hub face were the crank mounts all cut will be even there can not be a inbalance less fly wheel was off before . the mass of the fly wheel is still neutral just less over all weigth But the 4.3 and 350 are EXT 86up in the back with the one pc seal there is no heel on the back of the crank for weigth .the damper is int just like all older 350sQuote:

As long as the person doing the setup is cautious and verifies the hub and the surface are parrallel. I have witnessed a mis-alignment after the fact and you will end up with one "side" thinner than the other! I much prefer a blanchard grind machine. Set-up is tougher, mounting is tougher, but the finish is sweet!Quote:

I have a rotorary table thingie especially for flywheels for my surface grinder--I used it once--for an externally balanced big block chev wheel--it shook so bad as the grinder went back and forth over it that I could of moved the machine any where in the shop---
yep was going to buy a used fly wheel grinder machine from a closed shop. one that seen better days had a new diamond cup wheel for dry cutting all the old wet stone pump and tank was shot. still did a nice job but not much call for it

Well there is tons to the old racer's saying"it is much better to be lucky than good".Rufus is going to need a slave cylinder and master too.Another $250 to $300 bucks with the line.No sense in trying to do it later because the trans is out now.Yeah I know it will be a faded memory in 6 months.
