ok this is my first post im needing help finding a transmission for a 71 mach 1 im about to start restoration on.
the car came factory with a 351w from im told. and had a 4 speed manual transmission. so i was wondering if any of you know where i can find a manual 4 speed transmission that would work with my mach 1? im wanting to car to be as original as possible. so any help would the great
If you're looking for a tranny and saying your Mach I "...had a 351W..." you're obviously not doing a numbers matching restoration. To me you should be looking at a five or six speed to have OD and make your Mustang much more enjoyable on the road. Look at the TREMEC TKO500 or 600, depending on how much power you plan to crank into it, and you will have a very flexible platform. There are several TREMEC distributors out there, but Mike Forte of Forte's Performance (a CHR sponsor) is one of the best for providing a quality package system customized to your needs.Quote:

OK, just saying if you spend any time on the Mustang specific discussion groups you'll find that most people with vintage machines are opting for modern OD tranny's, with lots of kits out there to make the swap easy. Unless you're doing a concours car for competitive judging it's a great modification and you might pass a gas station once in a while instead of visiting so often. You might contact Mark at Toploader Heaven and see if he can guide you to an old OEM style 4 speed Home, or check out David Kee's place - he carries reman units David Kee Toploader Transmissions, Inc. Since you're calling Gelsi in Jersey, ask them about a top loader, too. The David Kee site has a list of tranny ID's by year - looks like you have two or three to choose from and still be year specific.Quote:

You could use a toploader 4 speed overdrive to get more cruise speed and mileage. I ran one behind a 351W in a '79 Mustang for 100K miles with no problems. Just avoid the SROD with internal shift linkage, they are crap.
most likely a 351C ..
