How do you change the speedometer gear on the tail shaft inside the rear housing? It looks pressed on.
yep a tin clip with a bolt looks like a Y then you pull the speedo out of the tail it has a o ring so they do get stuck in
the one on the shaft itself has a spring loaded clip .. you must pull the tail shaft cover..it is not pressed on
I pulled the tail shaft cover off turned the shaft several times looking for clip. No clip looks to be pressed on. and its steel.
news to me .. but i have`nt looked at a t400 in about 30 years
The speed o gear is to the rear of the gov. on the same shaft. I don't have a puller with long enough fingers to reach the back of the gear (6.250) from end of shaft. I don't want to disassemble trans to change, got to be a way to remove it.
Thanks
I agree MOST have a tab or some sort of attaching device. This one dosen't. there must be a tool to get behind the gear and pull it off
Yep I have the item in the picture but I don't have the electrinics to make my cable driven speedometer go... Ihave the new gear to install just can't get the old one off. the trans came out of a 89 chevy pick-up.
After a little thought I remembered an old trick I learned back in machinest training about 40 years ago. I first put a punch mark on the gear then put a rag in the housing to catch chips. I then drilled a hole in it. I then drilled a larger hole through the first one. The gear split (YES):D I removed it cleaned up the mess, and heated up the new gear in a can of oil. This is to not have it get bigger in one spot more than the rest. I slid the new gear on and finished putting it together. One more thing off my list. Thanks for the help guys
