thats is a oil slinger or what i call them . i set up many 9s and many times i never have had that tin washers as they were many times all new parts or big pin i always used RTV on the yoke and the splines and back filled under the space from the yoke to the nut . i never had a drippy 9..... you guys venting the housing ????Quote:

there are some areas where grease can ooze out and the modern syn fluids are bad--
Grease can leak thru the splines and behind the pinion nut.
Can leak from one of the five bolts holding the pinion housing if the bolt hole is open to rear
Can leak around the 10 studs---back in the 50s these bolts had copper washers under the nuts to seal plus can ooze thru the threads of the studs and nuts
I don't think any of it would of necessitated paying a bunch of freight'shipping to return it.
Well, since it was a brand new unit we wanted the guy who built it and warranteed it to have first crack at correcting the problem, that's why we went back to him. Plus, Ft. Myers is like a ghost town when it comes to GOOD speciality shops to do things like setting up rear ends, we have to go elsewhere all the time to get stuff done.
As for the synthethic gear lube, we didn't use it. The builder specifically said not to, so we used what he recommended, Valvoline 80-90 plus the Motorsport additive, which he supplies in the crate with every unit.
Bottom line, something was screwed up with that first one, and also with the one in my 27. The new one in Dan's car is not leaking a drop but the first one was leaking fluid out a few minutes after we filled it. The car literally sat there for 15 minutes and we saw the first puddle under the rear. Mine held up for 300 miles and is now dripping pretty good, so I am going to pull the whole thing and find someone locally to fix it. But that will have to wait until we get this weekend out of the way............I want nothing to get in the way of Dan's car going to Billetproof.

Thanks, CR, I don't want to speak too soon, but I think you are right about us making it.:D Monday night it didn't look like it though. Dan started the car up after doing some work to the fan controller and it wouldn't idle.....kept dying. We fiddled around a little and pulled the plugs but they looked ok, had 6 lbs fuel pressure, and everything looked as it should. He drove it around the block and it would clean out a little at higher rpms, but would still die at idle. It was late, so we called it a night figuring we would look further Tuesday night.
Last night Don came over to help us and he knows this tripower setup like the back of his hand because he owned it for years before selling it to Dan. We guessed we had a flooding problem from the way it was acting, so Don and I took off the top of the center carb while Dan worked on some other stuff on the car. What we found was lots of trash in the bowl, it looked like grinding dust. :eek: Dan had these carbs rebuilt by All American Carburetor in 2006 and they have been sitting unused in the shop ever since. Evidently, dust from working in there got into all three carbs and was plugging up the jets.
We cleaned the insides completely, blew out the jets, and put everything back together. When we turned the key it fired up and ran better than it ever has. :3dSMILE: Really glad Don was off last night and able to take care of these for us.
I picked up the grille shell and cowl vent door today from the body shop. They did a fantastic job and the baking in the booth really made the paint match the rest of the car very well. So tonight Dan and I will install the grille shell, mount the nerf bars (don't have time to get them chromed so they will be bare steel) and a couple of minor things. The to do list is very short, and hopefully Friday we can leave for Billetproof. Once we get this weekend out of the way our plan is to get in bed early and take a long breather before we tackle any more projects............we are burned out from the last couple months of thrashing to make this show.

The one for Best Truck is made from a Chevy valve cover, a transmission cluster gear, some spark plugs and wires, and other neat parts. The one for Best Of Show is HUGE and made from a 50's Ford torque convertor cover, some other transmission internals, two camshafts, two pistons and connecting rods, and two plaques that read Billetproof and Best of Show. Both are professionally pinstriped and simply works or art. The first one probably weighs 15 lbs nd the second one has to be 50 lbs, and is about 3 or more feet high.
As much as we loved them, we had a problem. We were in Dans rpu and the trophies would not fit. I called a taxi and he hauled them for us to where we could get them into Dan's truck. :LOL:
The Poorboy's Car Club is made up of the nicest bunch of guys and gals you would ever want to meet, and I can not thank them enough for what they did for Dan. He says all the pain and suffering for over 4 years building the car all went away today. He had so many nice people taking pictures and paying him compliments that we were busy all day. In the past 36 hours we have had about 2 hours of sleep, and as soon as I finish this celebration beer I am going to crash for the next 12 hours.:D

Here, I found two pictures of the two trophies that were taken before the lettering and pinstriping went on. These mean so much because some dedicated rodder spent their time and effort to hand make these. We love them.

So I'm lookin' at that second pic of the car and admiring that neat nerf bar that I don't recall seeing before, and how well it jibes with the rest of the front end treatment. Then I start to broaden my field of view and what do I see? Some chunky dudes BUTT!!!! Jeeeeeezzz........but I guess I'm glad he wasn't pulling a plumber.........:eek:

Charlie, our next "project" is going to be "no project for while". :LOL: We don't even want to see another car for a bit, but that will pass, I'm sure. Dan needs to catch up on his sleep and his life a little. Both have been consumed totally for the past 4-5 years by building a car and now he can start actually driving it and enjoying it. He IS going to build some baffles for the exhaust, it sounds like a fuel dragster now, but that will be easy to do.
Bob, Bob, Bob....... how did I know only you would catch that picture?? :D I was hoping you would post something about Dan winning those trophies because I was reluctant to do it so I would not come across as bragging. BUT, MAN AM I PROUD OF DAN!! :D He stuck to his plan and wouldn't let my many urgings to just get it done sway him from making it as good as he did. I also want to thank my Son Don, he really supported Dan though this by allowing us to steal his tools lots of times, mess up his part of the shop which he normally keeps so clean, and to pull our fat out of the fire by getting the carbs cleaned and working at the 11th hour. I've been blessed with two Sons that I love very much.
Jerry, yep, that is the front one, there is a larger one on the back that I don't have pictures of yet. When we regain some energy we will pull them off and send them to the platers and that should be the last bit that needs done.
Although Dan and I have an unspoken agreement that I stay away from his forum and he stays away from mine (I had to break that lately when I posted some updates on the HAMB because he was either working or sleeping and couldn't do it), I have asked Dan to come on here and post his thanks for the nice things everyone here has always said about his car and the help you all gave in solving some issues. He should be able to do that this week after work. My thanks go out to all of you for that also. :)

You guys have entered a realm where by every one will not only expect the highest level from you but expect that each project from now on will top the one's previous. It will sometimes almost be overwelming but with the snyergy that you and your sons have it will be possible.
I have lived in that sunny spot with our race cars for 40+ years and it is a challenge----
I'll bet you have, Jerry, and I think you are right. Already at the show some people asked what he was going to do to top this one next time. :LOL: It also dawned on me that the rpu I am starting to build can't be quite as rough as I planned on making it, not that it will be a showcar by any means, but maybe I will spend just a little more time on things to make it a little better than I planned.

Bob, that was a surreal moment when they gave him those trophies. He was in shock and I was beside myself with pride and gratitude for the Biletproof folks choosing his car. I watched Dan grow as a car builder while building this one, and questioned his decisions sometimes, especially when he cut up almost complete cars because he "didn't like what he had built." But in the end, I guess he was right. Thanks for posting that picture, and for the nice words you always posted on his build thread on the HAMB.......those were appreciated.
Mark, thank you very much. A man has to know his limitations, and I realize I am a hack compared to so many other car guys out there, lots of them right here on CHR. Having those people as bar setters makes the entire hobby better as it makes us want to spend a minute or two more making that bracket so it turns out nicer. Plus, we know when we post a picture of it 10,000 eyes will be looking at it and will be only too happy to tell us the good, and the bad. :LOL: When Al Gore started talking about the Internet Highway, I couldn't imagine what the h*** he was talking about, but it really has influenced our lives and given us car lovers a world we never knew existed before. How did we ever get along without it?
Here is one last picture of Dan with his car and trophies. The guys who labored to build these beautiful awards did it at their own expense and created some real works of art. Dan will cherish his forever.

You know Don, it doesn't surprise me a bit that the truck won. The quality of the build can be seen even with crappy internet pictures that distort colors so that pink and purple look the same and Bob's goddesses don't really look like the goddesses he thinks they are.
Okay, one more time! Just like I acquired that picture of Pops and Son above from one of my sources, the "lovely" ladies of Pops I post are HIS that I merely came into possession of.
