700 r4 1st gear issues
So my problem is the tranny won't shift into 1st gear. Truck drives in 2nd then shifts normally through the gears but I can't get it back into 1st. Even manually selecting 1st does nothing, just revs. Linkage is good. Injected motor so no carb cable.... any ideas? Govenor? I heard usually with a govenor problem you can't get out of 1st gear not into 1st gear like my problem seems to be. Thanxs.....

Huh? no kick down cable? I have a 700r4 matched to an LT1 and have the kickdown on the throttle body. It works great.
My current build is another LT1 but this time I'm using a 4L60e which is the electronic version of the 700r4.

There is no kick down cable on a 700R4, there IS a Throttle Body cable! They don't work the same, and if the TB cable is out of adjustment, you'll junk the tranny, if a kick down cable is out of adjustment, it'll shift goofy times.
All stock 700r4 trannies have a Carb, Throttle body, multiport injections hook up! Could be the problem, if so probably it's to late.

so how do I locate/check for adjustment the TB cable? Truck ran very well before I "lost" 1st gear. This is a built 700, don't know if that makes a difference......

1 Attachment(s)
Attached is from TCI - covers a lot about 700R4 install and again stresses the critical adjustment of the TV Cable

Oop's, I meant TV cable, Not TB cable. ;)

Even with the TV cable disconnected the trans should go into 1st gear. If it just revs in low, the low gear clutch pack is toast. I had one that burned up the 3-4 clutch pack, had to run the car in 2nd all the time. Ran good but no 3-4 just revved.

pulled the govenor, it checked out. So once we got it running, I discovered that if I put it in 2nd and got the truck moving then dropped it into 1st the truck would completely lock up. I was gonna drop the pan and have a look at the valve body..... clutch pack huh? Thanx. I'll check that out.

I would say something in the valve body isn't doin' what it should. Sounds like in your last post that, the 2nd gear band and the low/reverse clutch were applied at the same time, not good. Good luck and let us know what it is.
