4l80E Why so much?

I have a 4l80e w o/d that is in an older suburban and it stopped wanting to shift into 3rd and then no reverse. took it to local trans shop and they quoted me

$ 2800-3200 dollars estimate probably closer to the 3200 the manager said

I drove the car there and back for estimate, I've heard parts are pretty pricey but wow anybody have any experience with this trans and costs.

This tranny is bolted to a 454 I'd like to put in one of my cars possibly 57 Chevy thats why i,d like to keep em together.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

check with chevy for a factory rebuild--warranty will be good everywhere(if GM is still around)

They also can't estimate what it will cost to REPAIR a trans til they know whats wrong--they gave you an estimate for a complete rebuild and you might not need it

Do what Jerry says....price a GM reman. I bought a brand new
4L65 (the heavy duty 4L60) from Chevrolet dealer for $2300....

how about this---crawl under it and take the pan off and look to see if you have a pile of trash---if you do it is probably from something right above the trash
is it a 4 wheel drive???

I think I'd find a different trans shop.. Were they flying the skull and crossbones over the building??

Well the trans shop was AAMCO if that means anything, yeah I'll drop the pan and look and no its not a 4 w/d it was my wifes grocery getter and school bus only had about 130,000 miles on it never towed anything or hauled heavy stuff.

I just replaced the same transmission in my 99 Chevrolet van. And that was the price the local shops wanted here too. But I found a local rebuilder talked to him, paid cash and changed it my self for a whole lot less than half. Edd

That explains a lot. I have a 700R that they built that never did work right but the bill on the "rebuild" was 1800 bucks...They swapped out the original corvette unit and put in a standard unit they had pre built on the shelf on top of all of that. That shop was in St Augustine FL..

why not buy a low mile one from a yard ? i do not know what you have for yards around there ? but that s what i would do if i did not rebuild it
