Fill it first! Put a little on the snout too, the front seal will thank you.
I've been successful both ways but common sense (and most mfr's instructions!!) says to put at least a quart of ATF in the converter before installation to aid in the priming of the internals.
Is converter new? This lead me to ask another question. Back in my teens...when I had a used converter that I wanted flushed. I use to drill a hole for a pipe thread plug....fill with mineral spirits....do my own flush, plug, and fill with fresh fluid. Would you concider this acceptable? You'd be suprised the trash I'd get out of it.

.....Thank You Bob, Dave & Dave! I will fill it first & put some on the stout! No it's not new but it's the same one I had in my car before the motor blew which is why I have the Tq. Converter out of the car. It has about 12,000 miles on it..... Thanks again, Bill
ps, mine already has a little pipe plug in it, I guess to flush it?.....
i always fill mine to the gills the little mess is worth saving the 600 dollar converter
.....Thank You Gassersrule! yeah, I don't want to mess it up. I'll get as much in as I can...... Bill
