Converter problem????

Have a 71 Chevelle, approx 3400 lbs w/355 sbc, Comp Cams 280H magnum cam, .480/.480 lift, .230 dur @ .050, .280 Adv dur, 106 cl, range is from 2000-6000 rpm, iron Vortec heads, Air Gap, Holley 750 dp, 3.73 posi rear. Now here is my problem, I had a 10" TCI Streetfighter 3000 stall converter in it and it ran like a scalded dog at WOT, however was slipping bad during normal slow traffic driving. So, I bought a Jegs 2300-2700 12" converter. After installing this converter, my car would barely idle and shifted extremely hard, yes I have a shift kit in it but it never shifted that hard. Tried driving it shifting it manually and it would only go into 2nd gear if I was at 2000 rpms or higher, then only into 3rd if at 2400 rpm or higher. What a major pain. Sometimes it wouldn't even shift into 2nd it would just rev up then go into gear. I called Jegs and they did not seem to know what the problem could be. They said I could return it if I wanted for a refund or another converter. Everything has been checked and rechecked for correct installation. No bent lines, full fluid, etc. Any thoughts on this problem before I return it?

The converter doesn't affect how the trans shifts. Sounds like valve body glitches.

Not an automatic guy, but is the converter even hooked up below 2700 rpm???? Always thought the whole purpose of a hi-stall converter was to have one that would flash at a given rpm.....????? What does the car do when you mat it and manual shift at higher rpm?????

yep some of them kits for reprogram the valve body are not to street friendly they shift out at a hi rpm and hi line presure for a hard shift and late shift for just driving on the street hard to just pussy foot it by the cops with a 3inch EX and one of them valve bodys I KNOW THIS :eek: that is why i just use a full manual valve body he could try to play with the modulator that comes in to play with line pressure but ???

Thanks for the replies. Before I installed the new Jegs converter, I had the TCI StreetFighter 3000 in the car and it acted fine. It would shift normal during traffic driving, it was just when I needed to accelerate quickly, like entering a freeway that the engine would rev up then as I gained speed it would level off. Seemed like it was slipping to me. Maybe all was fine with that converter and it was doing what a 3000 stall converter should do. But this jegs is way off. I am going back to the TCI unit and see if everything returns back.

i have to cars with 4500 stalls both with 9 inch custom it is no big deal they roll along just fine under 2500**) it the cheap junk that will give you trouble:3dSMILE:

My 9" flashes 4200... agree no trouble unless you're on it all the time they get hot... prudent driving on the street (that the motor hates) is fine :cool: Climbing hills is another story, too.

well that is true but around here we are flat landers **) yep i just bang around town just off idle 2000 and it is fine but when i get out of town hang on :eek:
