Hi Everyone!
New guy here.... I have a 38 Ford truck with a new 427 SMALL block Chevy motor and a TH400 Trans. The motor now has 500 miles on it and seems to be breaking in nicely. It has a huge cam in it and hates to idle at 800/850 rpm while in gear.
Can I get a higher stall converter to help that situation? Right now it has a 2500, someone suggested a 3,000 would really help.

Get all the info together about your engine and truck. And call a couple of converter companies to get a recomendation. and Yes 3000 would help. but call and get a proper stall speed and only do it once
I have a Motorsport X cam (.542 lift, 286 advertised duration) in my small block 306 Ford engine in my t. I have a 2800 stall and I have no problem at all with idling or pulling through red lights etc. TCI claims I could have went to a 3000 stall with no problem, but remember more stall, more heat for the tranny. What lift is your cam?

Are you running A Holley Carb,might not be A converter issue.
What are the specs of your cam? It might be it doesn't want to idle at 800... I had to crank my idle out to 1100rpm for my 255* @ .050 cam... but if your cam is that stout you probably do need a higher stall....
As said it could be a carb/tuning issue...
How is your timing advance set? A little more lead at idle might help

That's why I resist answering these one-post wonders. I think they get on several forums and ask their question, then go with the answer that makes 'em feel all warm and fuzzy. My answers generally do not have that effect.Quote:
