55 Willys 4x4 pu 327/ Saginaw grinds going into 4th and sometimes 3rd, It has been apart to get a different main shaft (Advance Adapters) so that it will mate to a Dana Transfer case, While apart it got all new bearings and the brass syncro rings. All the gears looked good no chips, marks or missing teeth. New clutch with master /slave. Was thinking it was not bled out, but the Trans will go into rev without making a fuss. Any one point me in the right direction??

Double check the thrust slop in the main shaft. If a Saginaw is loose or even a tad loose it won't allow smooth transition into the gears because it's taking the force of your shifting it to preload the next gear to slide it into position. Front shimming should take care of the problem being careful not to move the whole shaft as an assembly too far off of it's contact point with the counter shaft
Shim it between the front bearing and 4th? How tight?
THat's where you want to do it if front shimming will bring it to specs. Double check your gasket thickness at the input candle stick and make sure it
s not too thick allowing the input shaft to come forward creating excess end play. Total end play (I prefer) to be about .020-.025". I have set them a shade tighter and had great success. Some factory books say you can have a tolerance of .040". That's too much. The iron and steel will not grow that much because the whole unit will expand pretty equal. Go thru your mental check list and be sure there is nothing you may have over looked when assembling. If you had to guess, where do you think the end play is at now?
Pilot bearing loose? Third and fourth are particularly dependent on a good pilot bearing.
Pilot has been checked a few times. End play was tight When it went together. How ever the mainshaft gets pulled back when the transfer case gets put on and the Drive gear gets tightened on. It is together right now so I can't check untill I pull It apart again.
Just to say thanks to those that helped. Input shaft to main shaft wobbles - just enuff to cause problems. The bearing and main shaft are new. Which means it needs a new Input $$$$$. As a remedy the truck now has a SM465/208 combo(FREE) and I can drive it ,Just can't do a 1,2 burnout --SM465s don't shift too quick at all --But I can Drive it :)
