700 shift probs!!???

Alright tranny guys, i just reinstalled my 700r4 behind my little 283, with no PREVIOUS problems, with a brand new (from jegs) tci breakaway lockup converter. Before the install, it shifted very firm through every gear and downshifted when it should have. After reinstalling and getting everything put back together, i took it for a test drive and noticed that the shifts were VERY sloppy even under light acceloration. under full throttle, it felt like it was slipping badly in the 1-2 shift and 2-3 shift was HORRIBLE. It almost seemed like it was going into neutral then after letting off the throttle, then it still softly engaged. i made sure the TV cable was adjusted properly, and even then did alot of adjustment test runs and still the same problems!!!

does anyone have any information for me?? or am i going to have to find me a new trans???!! :CRY:
ps. the trans is also tci streetfighter.

Before you jump ship and purchase a new tranny, you might want to tackle the pressure regulator. A stiffer spring from your after market supplier or shimming the one you have in there (be careful that it's a right diameter washer). If you choose the shimming route, a washer about .050-.060 inches thick should supply enough boost. The Breakaway converter has a flow path for volume different than the old converter and you're losing volume which through your valve body results in lower pressure. The spring is located in the pump body opposite of the orifice for the filter housing. Yes dropping the pan and fluid is required to do this.

so this is an "or" option or do i have to do both (spring and shimm?)

"OR" option. Doing both can elevate pressures too high and create cavitation or shift points at the shuttle valves at the wrong spot and weaken the shuttle valve springs.

One quick warning, when you pull the clip that holds it all together, it is under spring pressure so you may want hod the puck up with a little tension so the guts don't come flying out. Then you can control the release of the puck and spring.

well it sounds like you know ur transmission stuff, so ill give it a shot. just curious, do you know of any sites that have picture instructions of this being done? i just want to know what things look like before i tear into it.

I'm never quick to tell anybody to google anything but it is a good source for researching. You never know, you might find a site that will walk you through and maybe give you some do's and don't when it comes to working on the thing. I build a lot of street and race trannies because the power I give the customer needs something to transfer it to the ground. So, I had to get good at trannies to sell acomplete project and keep 'em happy.

will do sir, also, do you build and sell or do you go off of what ur customers call for? i am currently working on a mild nitrous 434-413 build.. not sure which one yet and im gonna need to step it up a bit. wanting to keep a 700 if possible?

I go with the customer's build. They may want to change to a different trans from what they have or build what they already have. Smaller cubes with less torque may not get all the super goodies. And yet big and small blocks with nasty torque get the expensive upgrades. If need be I'll go choose a core from the salvage yard and build it.
