Want to get the most I can out of my Stock powered 283 Nova (67) with 3.08 open rear. may go to a 350 (290HP) crate motor some day but nothing more than that. I have 2 Muncies to choose from a M20 or M21 both are good but don't want to do it twice, the M20 2 ring 2:52 1st and the M21 1 Ring 2:20 1st which one will make it leave the best and be better all around thanks. It's just a show car tired of the Automatic now!
Go with the M20, with a 3:08 rear the wide ratio will get you moving faster.
I prefer the wide ratio even with a 4:10 gear. It will launch harder and pull stronger the first 60 feet.:D
I second the wide ratio. The close ratio works on high winding engines that you want to keep near the top of the curve. The wide ratio will work better on the street with either of the engines you mentioned.
I've screwed together a lot of Chevys. For the street, I would not consider anything less than a 3:70 rear, if you want any kind of performance.....and with the 283, you definitely need the wide ratio.
