powerglide to 350...need help

I have a 1966 el camino with a powerglide trans and a column shifter. I am putting in a rebuilt 350 trans and would like to maintain the column shifter. I was told by a friend that the shifter linkage bolts right up to the powerglide shifter lever. Upon inspection of the shifter lever on the powerglide (it's the shaft that comes out of the trans) it does not look like it will bolt up to the 350 shaft. I prefer not to go to a floor shifter like a B&M as I have a bench seat and this arrangement would not be practical.Thanks for any advice you may give.
