At what RPM does my converter stall at???

....Hello, I read something somewhere that told how you can tell where your converter stalls at. BUT, I don't remember what it said :(... Something about where it stalled & where it 'flashed' at??? {whatever 'flash' is?}.... THANKS, Bill

When discussing torque-converter stall speed, two terms, and, consequently, two entirely different numbers are used: "rated stall," commonly called "footbrake stall," and "flash speed." What's the difference? Footbrake stall is just that. You load the converter by stomping one foot on the brake and the other on the gas. Watch the tach. The rpm at which the converter overpowers the brakes is footbrake stall.

Flash speed is quite different. Flash occurs the instant you release the footbrake and the rotating inertia, which is stored in the engine-flexplate-converter, is released. In many cases, this flash speed can be anywhere from 500 to 2,500 rpm higher than the footbrake stall speed. Often, a racer will stage at idle, hold the brakes, and "flash" the converter by flooring the gas pedal the instant the last yellow on the Christmas Tree comes on

.....THANKS Mooneye, THANKS Tech, ok I'll check it out tomorrow. I forgot to mention that I have a trans brake so I guess the best way is the True Stall way??? If so I've noticed that the most my car will rev up with the trans brake on is around 2800 RPM. So this must be where my converter is stalling at??? I thought something was broken cuz it wouldn't rev any higher....... But tomorrow I'll 'play around' with the three different ways ;)..... THANKS again, this site is such a valuable help. Bill

I noticed your location changed,.....did ya move out of Ojai?

billsbird if you are holding in the tranny brake button, the motor should rev as if it were in neutral, unless you have a 2 step rev limiter installed and set at 2800 with the brake button on.
