    Just a hunch......did you double check clutch clearances? These need to be a bit looser than you think or the specs say. Be patient with finding the right steel and clutch plate combo. It will burn up the bands quickly and cause first and third, fourth applications to go away and give you the funkiest shift or non shift problems. Do it again and loosen them up by at least .020". Don't forget to thouroghly clean the valve body again. Light sediments will come back to haunt you from your described conditons.
