leaker at the trans!

finished the install of rebuilt engine today and fired up for first time. Engine is pretty normal, but I am leaking trans fluid. I have the lower cover off of the bell housing and I can see fluid running down my trans cooler lines and I believe also from behind the converter. I plan on tracing it down later on tonight but my question is how difficult is the fix? Is there a seal behind the converter and can I replace it without removing the engine or trans? I know it doesn't sound practical but could the drive shavt be disconnected and the trans shifted back far enough, or is it best just to drop the tranny?

I don't know what kind of car all this is in but if your front seal is leaking I'd pull the trans to work on it.

thats what I was thinking, but I have some investigating to do. 1989 k2500 with 4 wheel. The trans is reall held in there with bracing but with some time I could get it out.

If you have enough room to remove the converter you may get away with it??

Drop the tranny or pull the motor, your choice. I would drop the tranny which means removing of the braces to the motor from the tranny, two drive shafts, a cross member, speedo cable and wires, linkage, coolant lines, inspection sheild, and torque converter. You should be able to leave the transfer case mounted ot the tranny. All you will need is a good tranny jack.


Then lower the unit and pull the converter out of the tranny. Pop the front seal out of the front pump, and install the new $5.00 seal with a little adhesive to the contact area, the outer lip.
