R4 torque converter question

does the torque converter have to be unbolted to get the trans out?
ive unbolted everything on my truck and the damn thing still wont come out

If you are talking a 700R4, technically no, but you would need lots of room to get the turbine shaft out of the converter. So the easiest way is to unbolt the converter. Good luck.

ok thanks, im tryin to get the driveshaft out too and neithers wantin to cooperate

What car are we talking about? Drive shaft should come out easily, just take off the four screws attaching it to the differential yoke. Put a screwdriver betewwn the yoke and the U-joint and carefully lever the shaft out. Be very careful to keep hold of the U-joint bearing cups, they like to fly apart when freed and send your needle bearings everywhere :eek:
Once the rear end of the drive shaft is lose you just pull it out of the trans. Actually there's nothing there it can catch on.
And yes, do unbolt the TC when you take out the trans, most cars don't have enough space to bull the trans back straight far enough to get the turbine shaft out of the oil pump bearing. Just makes the trans heavier to lift but unbolts fairly uncomplicatedly.

we just pulled a 700r4 this week end and best to remover whit the torque converter. and when removed it was difficult to get the torque converter off the trans. was fried. if it was still bolt to the flex plate I don't think we would have gotten it off. My boy worked for a trans shop removing and installing transmissions and there are times it is very difficult to get the t/c off. get a long bar and turn the engine and remove the t/c bolt the best solution Ed .
