Help needed regarding Ford AOD tranny

About 6 months ago the AOD tranny in my '84 Crown Vic lost everything but 1st and reverse. Just went out instantly. I think these AOD's are the worst transmission ever. My Crown Vic only has 58,000 miles on it (true little old lady ex car)

Anyway, I have another AOD from a 1990 Grand Marquis sitting under my workbench, that I have been saving to replace the one in my 5.0/Jeep truck, in case it ever goes.

My question, is the 1990 a direct bolt in to the 1984, or did Ford make some changes along the way? I plan to take a tape measure to them both, but I would like to be real sure before I start bench pressing the old one out. My one Son was saying something about electronic hook ups, so is that an issue?

If it isn't a direct swap, what years do I start looking for in the local junkyards?

I don't know Don, but check the Hollander Interchange Manual at the junk yard and it will let you know what units would be interchangeable.....

Good idea, is there an on-line version of this I can research before I get there?

pretty sure they are the same. But I wouldn't take my word for it.

The electronic hook ups he is probably referring to the AODE.

But one thing you are right about these trannys stink.

It should fit as I put a AOD from a 88 or 89 in the 84 crown vic I had a few years ago,I never had any problems with them and the one in the 84 has over 200,000 on it now. Jeff

Thanks for the posts, guys. I am going to take the tape measure to the one I've got stored to see if it looks the same, and then start checking the linkages, etc.

What I dislike about the AOD (in stock form) is that gears just suddenly disappear. My Son lost his 4th gear, mine in my Jeep really is sloppy going into 2nd when I'm on it, and now this one losing every gear but low and reverse, with no warning what so ever.

Another thing I hate is the fact they won't upshift into 4th until you lift off the gas. Just what you don't want to do when you are going through the gears hard.

IMO the C-6 is just such a stronger, better shifting tranny.
