I'm not an automatic tranny guy at all, but my new driver is going to have one. It's a '71 Ford pickup, 351 Windsor (stock). I currently have a C-6 installed in the truck, but with the price of fuel I am considering switching to an AOD trans. I don't plan on towing very often with it, mostly just a driver. Which tranny would I be best off with that would be the most hassle free installation as far as electronic controls go???
what about an overdrive box behind the C6?
I don't want to spend $2400.00 on a gear vendors for a daily driver!!! Other than that, good idea.
Try looking for an AOD transmission. They are called AOD or FIOD. You can find them in many ford cars and trucks. They came out in 1980 and up to 1992 had no electronics except for a neutral saftey switch. From 93 on they are all electronic and switched names from AOD to AODE then 4R70W. They are not hard to find and are not that much more expansive to rebuild compared to a C6. The only thing you would need is a throttle valve cable. It is in a way like the 700R4 in that it has no modulator and works off throttle pressure. Hope this helps.

Strange that you would automaticly go with an AOD rather than a 5speed or a 4spd manual with OD. As for the TV cable issue with the AOD, there is anohter option. The older AODs used a shift rod to controll shift points. This is a LOT easier to install than fighting with the TV cable. One problem that may come with this tranny behind a 351 is burning of the clutch packs. You may want to consider doubling the OD packs, as there are only 2 if memory serves me right. Thanks for the info. I think I will just stick with my C6, the AOD stuff sounds like reliablity could be an issue. I know I've got a set of 2.73 gears around here someplace.......
I'll second the 5 speed idea, sounds like it will do every thing you want, AOD's & AODE's are iffy at best (imho) and the add on OD's are costly...........ya do remember how to shift don't ya. :HMMM: :LOL:
Yeah Viking, I can still bang gears with the best of em!!!! Trying to make the pickup just a driver and not wrap a bunch of money up in pieces or the 5 speed would be in their allready. I ended up with this C6 on a trade deal, low miles on a quality rebuild, and am just trying to use the parts I have. Just need to get the truck done, sell it, and use the money on more interesting stuff!!!
:confused: Oh, I thought from your first post that you were going to keep/drive/tow with it, and I was talking about a newer bone yard 1/2 ton truck 5 speed, not a nash or something.
It should sell fine with the C-6 in it, put some pics up :toocool:
Hey Viking, it'll be like every other driver I've had, my daily driver until someone else wants it more than I do!!!!! Everything is for sale, just have to negotiate the price!!!!!!!! I'll post some pics of the beast when I get the front sheet metal put back on it and it looks a bit more presentable.
Ok, maybe one or two shots of the in progress stuff on the '71. Here's one of the interior, had to fab a console to get the shifter raised up to where you can reach it. That's an old Hurst ratchet shifter that has been laying around the shop shince Lassie was a pup!!!!!
And here's one of the engine, it's a 351 W factory reman with a bit under 10,000 miles on it. Took it out of a '75 Ford Elite that had an unpleasant meeting with Bambi on the highway!!!! Yeah, I know I put the alternator on the wrong side but I just have this terrible time leaving anything stock!!!!!
is that a GM alt. dave? kinda looks like it, but the old eyes ant what they used to be. :eek:
Nope, it's one of the old style Ford's with the external regulator, got some rewiring to do, huh?????

Tried one once, Mike. Had some problems with the charging at low speed, and some overcharging in a long distance drive. Maybe it was just a bad alternator??? Sure would simplify things, though......
thats all ive had for alot of yrs. no problem. i just take a stock one and run the one wire to it. dont know why you had a problem.

did you have a store bought one wire or a reg. one that you wired?
It was a store bought (Summitt, I think) GM alternator, had it on a customer's car. This has been a few years back, I probably just had a bad one or something.
thats whats so nice about them, is bolt them on and go. the only thing that I know could effect it would be a bad ground somewhere in the system. I'm sure you had the hot wire hot all the time. i burnt a few of them up one time on a blower motor i had, i turned the alt. around with the pulley facing the motor, look good but would burn up an alt in about 10 miles. i knew the alt. would charge either way, but i forgot about cooling it. after about 10 alt. and a week later I got an alt. fan pulley off of a corvair and fixed it. they turn backwards than a reg. motor, same alt. dif. pulley. :CRY:
Must of just been a bad alternator, chased the ground wire thing a bit, didn't seem to make any difference. Had a good battery ground and a ground from the chassis to the engine, body to the engine, etc. Might just go ahead and try another. Thanks for the help, Mike.
if you're not sure get a old alt. from the junk yrd. and wire it like this and see how it works before investing in a new one, you may like it this way just as well.. dont need the blue wire, but you have to idle the motor up a little when you crank it if you dont have it. if you alraeady know this just forget i said anything. :cool:
