powerglide tranny question

Hey, im somewhat of a novice when it comes to transmissions, i have a good solid knowledge of how they work and what does what. Anyway, i just got the monte running today and when i did the fluid never went through the cooler lines, No pressure, what could cause that? i put a new pump into it when i rebuilt it. I checked the fluid level and its still full so it didnt go and get pumped into the converter and run out of fluid in the pan. im just asking before i pull it out and take it apart maybe someon has a few suggestions. thanks, Joe

sounds like the pump is not turning or the pump gasket is blocking the fluid pick-up holes. check the pump gasket good. the valve body could be blocking the pick-up also. you may not have the conv. all the way in the pump. it hard to say.

Ok well i pulled the tranny down today and took it apart just now and i looked at the pump, pump looked fine, gasket was in place properly but the torque converter was almost empty, i filled it up before i put the trans on the motor, and now i filled it again after i took the tranny back down. well needless to say i still have no fluid passing through the cooler lines. whats the deal with that? anyone have any ideas? this is driving me nuts, i had the rear up on jack stands and started it and the wheels started turning??? wtf?? wow this really has me stumped. when i drained the trans fluid i did get less back then what i originally put in there though. wow, am i missing something here? any ideas would be greatly appreciated if you wanna call me that would be cool too, im outside under the monte, cell# 757 581-0381 if anyone has any ideas, id greatly appreciate it before i send this damn tranny out, which thats the last thing i want to do id like to fix this myself but im running out of ideas. thanks,Joe

No no noises. its pretty strange, i pulled the one of the cooler lines off while the engine was running and wanted to see if there was any suction or pressure and there wasnt anything. i dont know what to think at this point.

Well i know the convertor bolts are good i just put the tranny up a couple hours ago, the convertor is engaging the pump. thats what i was thinking that the convertor wasnt going all the way into the pump but it is. wow. this is starting to get very frustrating. i mean, really i cant see why there shouldnt be any fluid going through the lines. even took the pump apart this afternoon when i had the tranny down just to look at it and see of the gears were broken or something, but everything looked really good. and its a brand new pump, everything is brand new inside there.

when you put the new pump in, are you sure the 2 oil rings on the stator 1/2 of the pump were on there. the oil rings goes into thr front clutch pack and if you leave them out there is no pressure. you have a major leak, or the pump is not turning or the filter pick-up is blocked off.

You know, i mean i know the rings are there but damn i cant remember if they seemed like they went all the way into the front drum. damn. i think they did, i know the rings are on there i know it for sure. tell me more about this priming valve, when i rebuilt the tranny i took that p.o.s pin out and and tapped the bore and put a pipe plug in there and drilled the plug with like an 1/8 drill bit. maybe smaller but not much. i noticed the plunger did not move up and down though when i was done i think the pipe plug was too far down into the bore. any opinions on that? when i would loosen the pipe plug the plunger would move up and down. what do ya think?

dont know about the pos pin but i dont know of any valve that would keep the pump from pumping pressure except the pressure reg. valve. i would think though if the pos was free when you started it should be free now. why did you plug it?where is it at , in the valve body?

No, its in the pump body, on top. its spring loaded, i was told if the pin lets go it will drop all the oil pressure. well the pin looked really bad so i was advised to kknock the pin out and tap the bore and pipe plug it, i thought it was the pump priming valve...could be wrong on that one

thats the oil cooler by-pass valve, cant see that being the problem. the down shift timing valve is in the pump also. dont belive either one would keep it from pulling at all. might be the reason you dont have fluid at the cooler. the pump will by-pass that valve, but you trans might run hot. 6 cyl. (yrs. ago) didnt use a cooler, so when you plugged the cooler lines the cooler-by- pass valve would take over. i think the big oil rings are missing or broke on the stator pump, if the pump and conv. are ok.

if you pull the pump back out you need to make sure that valve is free. i really dont know what it would do if it was to tight. never seen a bad one.

I know the rings are in there, they arent o rings they are those locking rings (metal) if i had the tranny still down id pull the pump and send you some pics, the valve you said is the cooler bypass valve, thought it was some type of pressure regulating valve, it was in the inside portion of the pump body the part that goes into the front drum. and it looked kinda like a spool valve but short and i was told if the spring lets go it will lose all oil pressure and its best to tap and plug it especially if the pin looks worn. Damn i guess i will pull that damn thing out again tomorrow. :CRY:

Ok heres the thing as of today, i came home from work and pulled the tranny...again...i was looking at the pump priming valve, it was locked all the way down. i adjusted the plug i put in there so the priming valve moves freely and locktited the plug in place. the front pump is seating all the way into the front clutch drum and both steel seals are in place and locked. i didnt see anything else. while i have this tranny down is there anything anyone can think of before i stick it back up in there tomorrow? well i think i just about covered it all, i mean i know the converter is engaging the pump tangs its a brand new pump...priming valve is loose...cant think of anything else that would cause a no pressure situation other than the pressure regulating spring but i put the stiffest one in there from the shift kit, so its not like its loose. i remember the kit gave like three different springs i used the full race spring.... later,Joe
