Nothin' exciting just another "Daughter's Lumina" question. She started to drive her '92 - 3.1 Lumina to work today, but came back home when the trans. wouldn't shift.

Jenni told me the car would bog down between shifts. She failed to mention this has been going on for awhile now.
I thought it might be the modulator. I was told by the parts guy that it was the elect. shift solenoid not the modulator. Then when I took it out for a test I found it no longer bogged between shifts but would go into neutral when it should be shifting into drive. Not just slipping .... but in neutral until it slowed enough to shift into 2 or until I manually put it in 2. (Doesn't slip @ all in 1 and 2, shifts normal from 1 to 2). My thought was the seal must have let go for the ''drive'' clutch pack.? Not familiar with FWD trans. If that's the case, the car isn't worth the fix. Just thought I would ask on the off chance it may be the solenoid or modulator (In Pic.). I don't think I would even replace the elect. solenoid at this point cuz it's a @#$%^ to get to, and I've spent too much time on this thing already. As I said earlier I think it's a clutch seal. (I've overhauled 350 & 400th, but never had a fwd trans. apart). I'm thinkin' the bogging Jenni didn't think was a big deal, may have been caused initially by the elect. Shift Solenoid. I think, left unchecked, the boging between shifts smoked the cluches and / or blew the clutch seal. What do you tranny Guys think? Iz' it toast??"PLAN" your life like you will live to 120.

Yup, that's the one. Thanks for the info. Denny ................ and 10 bux sounds purdy' good 'bout now.

If it can be corrected externally I'll give it one last shot. She's been lookin' for a newer car for awhile now, so I don't wanna' get too involved in a reapair job on a car with little or no trade-in value. To get the cover off ...... to get to the solenoid looks to be a major job. driver's side axle goes throught the cover and there's a few other obsticles too ........ looks like it would be easier to pull the engine/trans. than remove it while in the car. I can think of a few dozen "other" projects I'd rather do than that.

I fixed the long time (years) oil leak (Distributor plug seal) that has the engine washed down with oil. Maybe the oil over time has messed up a connector for the solenoid? Anything too much more major than that I think I'll pass on repair."PLAN" your life like you will live to 120.

And you think TRANNY is any better? Lucky for you we don't have a lot of folks from San Francisco on here or you might get some responses WAAAYYYYYY different than you'd expect!! Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

I told her she needs to find one of those dealers with the offer to buy ANY TRADE IN no matter what condition. We'd get it there.Originally posted by lt1s10

She's loosin' interest in keepin' it and I'm not gonna' feel bad if she trades it off. I'm not too excited about puttin' much more time in that car. It has a fairly long "Fix" list, and you know who'll hafta' work on the list if she keeps it. "PLAN" your life like you will live to 120.
