    Talking 727 or turbo 400

     



    Need some advise on what would be better currently building a 34 chev 3 window coupe and intend to run a blown 392 hemi but have had different advice on auto's what is the advantage of running a turbo 400 on the 392 compaired to a 727 other than the obvious being availability

    thats the only reason that i know of. never raced one, but on the st. its a better trans. JMO

    Nice to see another old HEMI guy.

    Both are good heavy duty transmissions in stock form and well supported by the aftermarket with HD parts. I've had good luck with both.

    A couple of considerations that you might look at.

    Though not much different, I believe the main body of the 727 might be a little smaller than the TH400 which might make it a little easier to get under the floor boards of the car.

    Depending on the mods to the tranny, the TH 400 usually requires a vacuum source for the modulator, where the 727 does not use a modulator. (Which might be a consideration in a blown application).

    Shift points on the 727 are controlled by the kick down linkage and it is critical to have it properly adjusted to prevent flaring between shifts and burning the tranny up.

    If length is a concern with the 727, there was a version (usually found in motor homes) with a very short tail shaft (I believe it cut well over a foot off the length of the tranny). I've only seen these units in the BB case, however as the SB and BB 727 use the same internals the short output shaft and housing can be bolted into the SB unit.

    also belive every bloke deserves a blown hemi once in life

    that hemi might slip the clutch you reckon.was that what they called them things? if you had one of them you wouldnt need anything else. i had one about 40 yrs. ago.

    It was a 727 Torqueflite with a special input shaft to go into a clutch and the low gear pack bolted together, I believe.

    ok ive seen them, but never used one, i was thinking about the old automatic/stright shift trans. chry. had back in the late 40's. you could put it in gear and go or you could shift it if you wanted to. that set-up you'er talking about was the hot set-up at one time for the drags. havent seen one in a long time. might work with that hemi.

    Called fluid drive, had one in my '47 Dodge, actually a pretty neat setup. All it needed was more hp in front of it

    that was a 47 or 48 dodge i had . didnt keep it long though, but the trans. worked great.


    i think that hemi might be a little over kill.
