This is probably a dumb or basic question, but I dont know much about transmissions. My trans (AT) was taking a while to change gears, so I put some LUCAS stop slip in the tranny fluid. Thi shelped a little but now when I drive the Trans wont leave the first gear.
Is this a major or a minor problem? Does the whole thing need to be changed or rebuilt? and How much shoul I expect to pay?
Any recomendations would be helpful. Thanx
There are many reason's why your transmision will not shift up,,,You need to find a shop you can trust,,or a mechanic friend to take a look at it for you,, it could be something simple like a bad govenor,,,or more expensive like a bad pump,,,too many variables to go into,,,if you want more helpfull suggestion's you need to be more specific,,,like what kind of tranny is it? chevy,,,ford,,,,dodge,,,etc.
P.S. Dont go stuffing additives in your tranny,,specialy if your unfamilliar with auto transmisions.Quote:

The tranny is out of a Firebird, 400 block. I dont know anything about trannys, but i good with mechanics, can anyone suggest a book or manual that might help me to do-it-myself. Or is to intricate and better left to a pro.
its all kinds of good books, but wheather you can do it or not is the ? anybody can learn how to rebuild auto. trans. but it sure would help to work with someone else the first few times. to do a good job on a trans. you need to understand how it works. it would be nice if you could find someone that would let yhou work with them cleaning parts, let you see how its done. i did them for for yrs. and did ok but after i went to my first GM school on them i got good at it. good luck.:cool:Quote:

IT1s10 is giving you good advice here,,yes you can get the books at most any library,,,but they won't go into detail very much.
Also you need the correct tool's to do an automatic transmision rebuild.
When i did my first one it was a ford C6, and although it did work,,,it never worked right.
Like ya gotta know how to read a hydraulic circuit diagrahm,,,and have an understanding of hydraulics,,,not just mechanical.
It's like anything else,,,,you gotta do it a couple of time's to be good at it.
And the best tool at your disposal will be a friend who know's what they are doing.
I say ,,,,,Go for it,,,,but pick up a spare Tranny from the Wreckers and swap it out first,,,that way,,,your Fire Chicken will still be driveable.
