powerglide info needed
well how much fluid goes in a powerglide with the convertor empty?DO IT NICE NOT TWICE

Those fig. looks a little low to me. its been awhile sense ive rebuilt either one, but i must have poured a couple qts. on the ground. they should know.

Make sure you are adding converter & trans capacitys, so his glide would be between 6 and 9 quarts, I know the 10 quarts for the 400 is correct.

Me to, but according to them you couldn't get 5 qts in a pg before you started it up. im sure they are right, but im also sure i put more than that in them. wish i had my gm 400 trains serv. manuals, but all of them burned in the fire. the trans. cooler and lines must hold more than i think.Originally posted by DennyW

I never checked but I'd guess the lines and cooler would hold around two quarts

i never though much about it, but all i did for 4 yrs is rebuild these things and those # just came off the top of my head, but its something you do untill its full and you dont count the cans every time, but those # came to mind, and i would blow the lines out everytime, so hope thats the answer.Originally posted by viking

sure would look good. i looked into that a long time ago about doing a el camino and after checking on the glass i lost interest in done it. id love to do it but my health wont let me do much anymore and i dont pay other people to work on my stuff. i do all of my work except the paint and i have done that. i like to build them, then i get tired of them and wont something dif. i might have to hang on to this one.

Where does all the extra oil go ? the pumps probably filling up the torque converter 1st time you start it up. A lot of fluid goes into that donut.
The thing I want to figure though, you fill the converter half full on the bench before you slot it into the trans, then when, the pump is pumping all that fluid into the top half of the converter, is all the air displaced by the fluid or does some of it get compressed in the converter.
It's just a thought that comes back and "haunts" me from time to time.
