'39 Cadillac - Need suspension Help
I'm a new guy here, and am looking for any advise, comments, or referrals on the suspension on my 1939 Cadillac 60S (X-frame).
I have a newer 472 V8, 400 tranny, P/S, and steering column installed long ago by the previous owner from a 1973 Cadillac Eldorado. It seems geared low (probably due to stock rear end), but otherwise works well.
My problem is the crummy drum brakes (even after rebuilds of everything including master & wheel cyclinders), and now the front end steering needs rebuilt.
I also was told I could use a brake booster from a Vega where the Master is now, and it would fit give me more power to the drum brakes ??
My question is, should I just put a newer front end under it (with disc brakes), and what would be an easy replacement?
Or should I just rebuild or somehow upgrade what I have.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm not sure where to go from here.

if you want to do it right and have a reliable drver, dump that stock front and rear. i've got the same car and i used a nine inch ford rear with explorer discs...up front i used a mustang II.with that much motor you will need a better suspension than stock. i also mounted a power booster with a newer corvette master in the stock location using the stock pedal. it works really well. if you need more answers e-mail me @ jswagner58@hotmail.com

The 60 series are heavier than most street rods so it definitly would be nice to have power steering. I've installed Must II,Camaro & GM-Gbodys' IFS plus several others. I have had bad experiences w/the R&P leaking fluid on the Must II. The owner on the latest one I installed has changed the R&P twice.
I would install a GM IFS for this reason. Plus, I just like the way the GM clip's drive on a heavier car compared to other IFS.
Ther are other x-members that I would consider if you want to spend more money.....The kit that uses Dakota components & the one that uses GM components. I have not used either, perhaps others will step forward on info on these kits.
I've att a picture of my Rolls that I used El Camino Front & rear Suspension connected by 3"x5" sq tubing. This is just too much work!Last edited by chevy 37; 05-21-2006 at 12:50 PM.

sounds like you know your cars. only suggestion i would have is to use an early (68 to 74) nova type subframe with rear steer. it's heavy enough and the steering box won't interfere with the radiator. good luck.
Shine's done a lot more hot rod & muscle car builds than me, but I've found an adjustable PV to be helpful in balancing front to back braking. All OEM vehicles use a non-adjustable proportioning...
