9 Inch Ford Rear Disc Brakes

I need some help. I know that Ford placed disc brakes (rear) on several year models. Has anyone used this route to eliminate the purchase of speciality vendors such as Wilwood? If so, would you have a list of parts you used during the task? Also, what size rear rotors did you use and with what wheel combination. I am building a 55 2 door sedan and would prefer to go this route simply to be able to purchase over the counter replacement pads and other parts - any help will be appreciated. There is a direct bolt on from a Ford Explorer......I can not find the info on it . I hope someone else will resond w/the info.....Don
Ps- the parts can be bought from a Ford dealer. Sorry this was not much help but, at least you know there is a way of doing it w/o going the after market way.

One other thought - do a search on all the hot rod/streetrod sites & you will get the info.

Don, I believe I saw the information you are referring to about the Explorer disc brakes. The guy said it was a simple bolt in, but he did have to modify the backing plates to match the bolt pattern on the 9" housing ends. I think he started with a big bearing 9". If you look at the bolt patterns on the different housing ends, you can see that they are similar but not exact.

Interestingly enough, I have seen several magazines say that the Explorer conversion will NOT work... I have no first hand experience on this conversion, so I can't say for sure either way.

I was looking at a conversion that ECI has (I think it was ECI). Comes with the brackets to mount caliper from a '80-'85 Cadillac Seville. Not sure what rotors it uses for a Ford bolt pattern, but it uses rotors from a '79-'81 Trans Am. for a Chevy bolt pattern. In any case, it looks like it uses OEM components. Yes, the magazines do say that it will not work.........They also say that nobody should work on their own car. Only their approved suppliers make anything good and they get free swag for their rides. Try http://woodyg.bizland-asp.com/forum/ and post a question or search for Explorer brakes. Unlike magazines that can only fabricate stories there are people who actually build things who will answer your question. Fluid goes in the disc/disc mc, air bubbles go up, fluid flows to your armpit and payday's Friday.

hey lisen acouple of years ago a buddy took like a 1985 linclon versiles ford 9 inch with disc brakes... and it worked really well.... but there is truth about hydrulic pressures i would use master and all valving... that goes with it well its somting to check in too hpoe that helps:

some of the old granadas with the 302 had for 9 's with disc in them. probably to hard to find.

i you do some homework you find that some versales had ford 9 inch in them with disc set up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a rear end from a 77 buick Riviera that has disc brakes. It's probably too wide for most hot rods. They didn't work very well in the car and were responsible for the car getting totalled. The guy who crashed it knew they were sticking but he didn't want to mess with them. He thought the front brakes were good enough. The e-brake has mechanical calipers. I'll sell it cheap if anyone wants to do the brake job and use it.

The guy uses 87 Lincoln discs and makes up mounting brackets which he sells. There is a tremendous amount of info including all the Ford part numbers. I'am putting one of these into my '49.
