What kind of car are we talking about, just for grins?
1926 ford model-t coup full fendered,454,turbo 350,9" ford hope this helps.
Well, the standard travel on a hot rod coilover is 3"---hard to say what clearance should be not knowing what your suspensin is.....
it's a 4-link,wishbone
What brand of coilovers, are they 3" travel or something else?
Drop the suspension down to the snubbers or the end of the shock travel, determine how much tire growth you will have, Street tire not so much, wrinkle wall at 200 MPH different story. Then add a smidgen more for good measure and whaaalaaaa there you have it. ;)
Speaking in general terms, your results may vary.
With a 4 Link and coilovers on a light car I think the spacing of the tire in the fender is more of a "look" you want vs mandatory clearances. Like Dave says, the coilovers have about 3" of travel, but in my experience to date you're going to see about half that in any normal situation.
